At the Midland and West of England Great Dane Club's Championship we had two breed judges officiating. Gillian Rose, who had an entry of 28 Danes giving 31 entries and awarded Selmalda Jealous Guy 1st in his Junior Dog class and eventually the RCC. In Open Dog Selmalda Ricochet was awarded 2nd and we think you will agree he has matured wonderfully. In Bitches Elaine Hyde had attracted an entry of 45 giving 48 entries and presented Selmalda Liza Jane with 2nd in Open.

At the East of England Show breed specialist and leading all rounder Jeff Horswell had secured an entry of 61 Danes giving 68 entries. Our own Selmalda Jealous Guy, at his second show, topped the Junior Dog class before being awarded the Challenge Certificate and later Best Of Breed. What a fantastic accolade for a 14 month old male. Selmalda Ricochet was 4th in Open Dog whilst his litter sister S. Liza Jane was 3rd in Open Bitch. Judge Jeff Horswells critique - 1st Junior Dog - SELMALDA JEALOUS GUY (AI) (MS L & MR A Chappell) Really super brindle, it was a joy to see such a wonderful Dane. Lovely type and outline. Long head of correct width, plenty of work in it. Super neck. Well filled, deep chest. Well ribbed. Enough hind angulation and super muscle. Low hocks. Accurate mover and has a long and easy stride, with that springy action. Real quality dog, he is still slightly raw, which is a good thing, but fell for him, consider him easily one of the best I have judged in the UK. CC & BOB.

With Lori missing from the show as she is in season and no males entered it was left to Selmalda Liza Jane to represent the kennel at the EEGDC. Samantha Dolby was appointed and had an entry of 44 Bitches giving 55 entries. Liza topped an excellent Open class before being awarded the RCC, her fourth to go along with her 2 CC's. Delighted with her performance, LJ can move.

Following his BOB award from Jeff Horswell Selmalda Jealous Guy competed in a very strong Working Group. Tim Ball was appointed to judge for the first time at this level and we were delighted with how well Guy coped with the pressure and atmosphere within the big ring, such a challenge for a youngster. We are super proud of him.

After 15 months of COVID19 lockdown Southern Counties hosted the return to the show ring where Sue Searle was overseeing an entry of 64 Danes making 80 entries. We had our two lockdown youngsters entered were delighted with how they took to the whole experience. Selmalda Jealous Guy won his Junior Dog class whilst litter sister Selmalda Oh Lori was 4th in her respective Junior class. It was good to be back and enjoyed seeing everyone again.

On Saturday 1st we were invited to compete at the Eukanuba Pup Of The Year Final at Chesford Grange in Warwick. Following Liza Janes qualification at WKC last August she was 1 of 20 qualifying puppies on the day - the future of British dogdom is looking very bright. The judge on the day, a closely guarded secret until all the exhibitors were in the ring, was Paul Eardley. LJ put in an amazing performance and we extremely proud of how she managed with all that was happening within the arena. Thank you to everyone who passed on their positive comments and a special thanks to all at Eukanuba for looking after us all so well.

Further to Liza-Janes success at Manchester we wanted to shout out loud about how proud we are of her and litter brother Rico. We feel this advertisement does just that and were delighted to be able to secure the back cover of Our Dogs. Hope you like it!

A super day at Manchester where the two Juniors did us proud. Selmalda Ricochet put in a top class performance to win his Junior Dog class and his sister Selmalda Liza Jane topped her Junior Bitch class. In the Bitch Challenge judge Tom Johnston awarded Liza the Challenge Certificate. Thats both kids with 2 CCs each and at only 16 months of age Lesley and I are over the moon with their achievements.

Here is the critique for Retee from judge Jean Pratt - Limit Dog 8 (3) 1. Chappells Hoppinghams Changes Selmada 2 year old Harlequin. A well grown tall boy, but well balanced. His head is in proportion to his size, he has equal breadth and width with no excess lip. Lovely crested arched neck leading to ok front angulations, well filled forechest, ample bone and beautiful catlike feet. He has width, depth and substance to brisket. I would have preferred a slightly less rise to topline but this dog had excellent rear angulations and strong hock which showed in his movement the best in this class.

Following the tremendous success of our two youngsters at City of Birmingham Lesley and I were delighted to realise that we had also achieved our 100th CC bred by Selmalda. Thanks Kerry and Vince for this feature in Our Dogs this week.

Certainly a day Lesley & I will remember forever! At the City of Birmingham our Danes achieved the following; Selmalda Ricochet (Am. Ch. Rojons Legendary Kiss Kiss v Svevo x Ch. Selmalda ZiZis Journey J. W.) - 1st Puppy Dog, Best Puppy Dog and DCC! Hoppinghams Changes Selmalda (Fi. Ch. Ozaenas Suoernova x MiHavana Independence ) - 4th Limit Dog Breeder Anitta Kilpeläinen Ch. Selmalda The Journey J.W. (Int. Multi Ch. Diplomatics Val Kilmer x Ch. Selmalda Rock Ola Baby J.W.) - 2nd Open Dog co-owner Jacqui Williams Selmalda Liza Jane (Am. Ch. Rojons Legendary Kiss Kiss v Svevo x Ch. Selmalda ZiZis Journey J. W.) - 1st Puppy Bitch, Best Puppy Bitch, BCC, BOB and Best Puppy topped with a super Working Puppy Group 4! Thank you, sincerely, to breed judge Mrs AJ Flower and Puppy Group judge Mary Deats. Also, to Jacqui, John & Heather for the drinks and support and to all who passed on their congratulations. Working Puppy Group judge Mary Deats critique - 4. Chappell’s Great Dane bitch, Selmalda Liza Jane, almost 12 months old, with many of the breeds desired characteristics present. She presents an eye-catching outline for balance, excellent neck and body, strong bones, very good feet. Her head has the correct proportions, depth of muzzle and no excess flees, very good eyes for shape and colour, well set ears, and she moved with such ease and always true. Judge Alaine Flowers critiques for our Danes - PD – 1st Chappell’s Selmalda Ricochet. Elegant red Fawn dog with Black muzzle, lovely length of foreface, crest of neck, correct lay of shoulder with just enough upper arm, flat bone, level back into angulated quarters. Just under 12 months. I would like to see more bone but his proportions are correct and in profile his lines flow and are pleasing on the eye. Moved well and my DCC today. OD – 2nd Chappell & Williams Ch. Selmlada The Journey J.W. – 5 year old Fawn Dog in good condition, level back and angulated quarters, moved well. PB – 1st Chappell’s Selmalda Liza Jane. Graceful Fawn bitch of nearly 12 months. Appealing head, Black mask with good length of foreface and expression, clean cut neck, correct lay of shoulder, level back slight rise over the loin into correct croup and angulated quarters. Moved freely. Although I prefer more strength of bone, this little detracts from the beautiful qualities in this young dog, in that there are refreshingly no exaggerations in structure. Her lines flowed, the best Dane I saw today. BCC, BP and BOB.

The long, winding road to Builth Wells where Andre Van Den Broek (NL) was appointed to judge the breed for the first time. It is safe to say that there were a number of bizarre decisions made by our judge and our results were mixed! Selmalda Ricochet - 1st Puppy Dog, Hoppinghams Changes Selmalda - unplaced, Ch. Selmalda The Journey J.W. - 2nd Open Dog and Selmalda Liza Jane 1st Puppy Bitch and RCC! In the Eukanuba Pup Of The Year competition Liza Jane was an absolute star and won the days heat overall under Tom Johnstone. Returning for the final on the Sunday Liza was up against the Papillon from Friday and the Pointer who topped Sunday. Naturally we were delighted when Liza was awarded the Overall Heat Winner for WKC and thus qualifies for the final next February. So, so proud of her. Here is Puppy Stakes judge Tom Johnstons critiques - Puppy Dog (Pastoral/Working/Terrier) 2nd Chappell’s Selmalda Ricochet, Great Dane. Strong and elegantly built. Good headpiece with well set ears. Good rib and at right stage for age. In good coat and moved steadily. Puppy Bitch (Pastoral/Working/Terrier) 1st Chappell’s Selmalda Liza Jane, Great Dane. Lovely head and expression, good skull, eye and muzzle. Clean neck into well laid shoulder. Good depth and strong loin. Quality bone and well set tail. In very good coat and condition and moved with good steady stride holding a balanced shape. Overall Winner.

At Bakewell Agricultural Open Show there were 15 Danes entered, including two Champions, and our very own Harlequin male, Retee, was Best Of Breed. Our sincere thanks to breed judge Annette Harrison for recognising his qualities and also for the lovely silverware donated. Here is the photo secured afterwards with Annette and Hoppinghams Changes Selmalda. Retee was bred in Finland by Anitta Kilpalainen. Here is the judges critiue - Open 7 (1Abs) 1st 303 Hoppinghams Changes Selmalda (IMP FIN) 20month old Harlequin dog nicely marked with black torn patches. Muscular, strong yet elegant to look at. Handsome head. Face well chiselled and proportioned with tight eyes black nose and a pleasing expression . Nice length of neck into well laid shoulders. Forelegs straight with flat bone. Muscular hindquarters. Second thigh long and good turn of stifle. Moved with enthusiasm and drive with a good topline and head carried high. Which won him the class and my BOB.
